Why visit

Bruno Granholm's terminus station of 1907 stands on the shore of Haapavesi, where Asemantie comes to its end. Though the details have worn away over the years, the place still carries its character.

Look for: Walk along Asemantie and look at the double rows of lindens and elms — and the traces of rails and platforms before the station, which have kept their distinctive character.

About this site

The terminal station of the Elisenvaara-Savonlinna railway in Savonlinna is located on the shore of Haapavesi along Asemantie, which branches off from Olavinkatu. The residential area is on the western side of Asemantie and the street ends at the station building. The depot is behind a rock cutting on the north side of the station.

On both sides of Asemantie there are double rows of lime and elm trees. In addition to the station building, the area contains the station master's house (1907) and the track superintendent's house (1910) with their yard enclosures. The station building from 1907 was designed by Bruno Granholm. The current appearance has been stripped of details as a result of alterations.

The Asemantie side has been a significant target of new construction. The immediate surroundings of the railway station have more clearly become part of the urban structure and the development of the city centre. The forecourt of the railway station, with its traces of track connections and platforms, has retained its characteristic identity.
