Why visit
Beside Häme's medieval castle, on the town's old site, spreads a barracks district built up between the 1850s and 1910s — a reminder of Hämeenlinna's standing as a military centre.
Look for: Tell apart the park-like northern part and the bare southern part; of E.B. Lohrmann's 1850s buildings, two brick troop barracks and an infirmary survive.
About this site
Linna Barracks is a building-historically exceptionally multidimensional barracks area from the 19th century and early 20th century, located next to Häme Castle on the city's old site, and a reminder of Hämeenlinna's importance as a military centre. The Linna Barracks area is bounded to the south by Häme's medieval castle, to the west by Tampere Road, to the east by Vanajavesi, and to the north by the City Park.
The northern part of the area was already in the early 19th century a depot area for Russian troops and the location of, among other things, the Crown Pharmacy's laboratories and staff quarters. At that time, the southern part of the area next to the castle was unbuilt. This bipartition is still visible in the difference between the park-like northern part of Linna Barracks and the austere southern part.
Linna Barracks is one of the most significant historical barracks areas in the country, built up during the 1850s–1910s. The 1850s barracks represent exceptional military construction and architecture rarely found outside Helsinki, designed by architect E.B. Lohrmann at the intendant's office. Two brick enlisted men's barracks and a sick bay have survived from the founding period of the barracks area.
The main guardhouse and bakery building date from the 1860s. The officers' wooden residential buildings date from the 1880s. The 1910s barracks represent red-brick standard barrack architecture, as in, for example, the barracks at Dragsvik in Tammisaari and at Hennala in Lahti. In the park-like northern area stands the oldest building in the complex, a partly two-storey wooden house that was built in the 1830s as housing for the personnel of the Crown Pharmacy that operated in the area, and is now known as the General's House.
