Why visit
The station's oldest buildings are among the few remnants of the Karelian railway left on the Finnish side. Just east of the Pielisjoki, close to the centre, the broad station yard still tells its own story.
Look for: Beyond the station building, seek out the stationmaster's house and the old engine shed — the yard's most distinguished structures. Of the long goods-shed row, only the brick gable end survives.
About this site
The oldest buildings at Joensuu station are among the few buildings of the Karelian railway remaining on the Finnish side. Among the most distinguished buildings on the large station yard are, in addition to the station building, the station master's residential house and the old locomotive shed. Of the long row of goods warehouses, only a brick gable end remains.
At the southern edge of the area, right at the edge of the railway tracks, there is a railway workers' residential area. The station area is situated near the city centre east of Pielisjoki, where industrial areas have also formed. Joensuu railway station and its surroundings are a nationally significant built cultural environment.
