Muhoksen kirkko

Muhos

Why visit

On the south bank of the Oulujoki, where the river broadens into a still reach, stands Muhos's buttressed church with its west tower, built in 1634 — one of our oldest wooden churches still in use. Pause in its quiet by the water.

Look for: Seek out the unusually valuable painted decoration in the sacristy from 1774–78 (E. Granberg); outside stands an Ostrobothnian Renaissance bell tower from 1762.

About this site

Wooden church, buttressed church. The west-towered buttressed church from 1634 on the southern bank of Oulujoki, widened into a still pool at Muhos church village, is one of the oldest wooden churches still in use in Finland. The Ostrobothnian Renaissance bell tower dates from 1762. The sacristy's painted decoration from 1774–78 (E. Granberg) is of exceptional value. The neo-Gothic features in the church and the tower date from the renovation in the early 1870s.
