Why visit
Hatsala burial ground was laid out in 1811 in the north-west corner of the grid-plan area, shared by the town and rural parishes, and stayed in use until the 1860s. The 1787 plan had marked the ground as a market square.
Look for: The monument area covers at least the south-east corner of the old square, where most of the 19th-century grave monuments stand. The embankment framing today's park was made in the 1920s.
About this site
Hatsalan hautausmaa perustettiin 1811 ruutukaava-alueen luoteiskulmaan kaupunki- ja maaseurakunnan yhteiseksi hautausmaaksi. Sitä edelsi Vanha hautausmaa Väinölänniemen kärjessä. Hatsalan hautausmaa oli käytössä 1860-luvulle saakka. Vanhemmassa, 1787 laaditussa asemakaavassa Multamäeksi -nimetty alue oli merkitty toriksi.
Nykyistä puistoa rajaava penger on tehty 1920-luvulla. Muinaisjäännökseksi katsotaan ainakin torin kaakkoiskulma, jossa pääosa 1800-luvun hautamuistomerkeistä sijaitsee. Sankarihautausmaa perustettiin alueen lounaisosaan. Hautausmaa-alue on myös valtakunnallisesti merkittävä rakennettu kulttuuriympäristö.
