Why visit

On the north-west edge of Hamina's town-hall square, among tall deciduous trees, stands a purely neoclassical stone church. Step in beneath the barrel vault, flanked by galleries borne on Doric columns.

Look for: Seek out the altar fitting and pulpit of red beech, and the altarpiece 'The Resurrection of Christ' painted by B.A. Godenhjelm. To the west, the porch is adorned with pilasters bearing Corinthian capitals.

About this site

Stone church. Hamina church, freely positioned on a plot with tall deciduous trees at the northwestern corner of Hamina's town hall square, is a cleanly designed neoclassical sanctuary. To the rectangular main church a semicircular sacristy is attached in the east and a vestibule with Corinthian capital-equipped pilasters in the west.

The church hall is covered by a flat barrel vault and bordered by galleries supported by Doric columns. The altar furnishing and pulpit are of red beech. The altarpiece "The Resurrection of Christ" was made by artist B.A. Godenhjelm. On the church plot there are hero graves (Veikko Leistén, Rafael Blomstedt), a civil war memorial, and a memorial for the remains left in Karelia.
