Why visit

Raised in Empire style right after the Turku fire, these log houses speak quietly of a city rebuilding itself, part of the small-scale townscape that survives around the cathedral.

Look for: Notice how the turn-of-the-century carpenter and Jugend alterations and additions layer over the oldest Empire-style houses.

About this site

The log residential buildings designed by master builders Carl Helenius in 1828 and 1829, Anton Salviander in 1898 and 1903, and K. Helander in 1904 were converted in 1980 into departmental buildings for the University of Turku. The oldest buildings were constructed immediately after the Turku fire in the Empire style, but modifications and extensions were made in the Carpenter and Art Nouveau styles at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The buildings are connected to the small-scale urban environment around Turku Cathedral. After university use ended, the buildings were returned to residential use in 2020.
