About this site

Stone church. Janakkala's medieval stone church, dedicated to Saint Laurentius, is the last of Häme's medieval stone churches. In form it was originally a rectangular single-nave long church to which a sacristy and weapon house were attached on the long sides. The church was expanded into a cruciform church in the 1840s. The church interior was renovated in 1933. Further changes to the interior and choir were made during the 1992–1993 repair. Some of the church's medieval saint sculptures are still in the church. Funeral coats of arms from the 17th century have also been preserved. The pulpit is from the 1660s and its maker is assumed to have been the Ostrobothnian Mikael Mikaelsson Balt. The altarpiece Jesus on the Cross was painted by B.A. Godenhjelm in 1851. In front of the church's western gable stands a three-storey bell tower whose lower part is built of stone. Building master Martti Tolpo built the tower in 1784–1792. The church bells are from the 18th century. The old churchyard is surrounded by a grey stone wall that was once covered with tarred shingles.
