About this site
Mikkeli garrison area is a well-preserved complex with three distinct sub-areas: a timber barracks area from the 1880s, a Russian brick barracks area from the 1910s, and buildings completed in the 1950s and after. The oldest part, the timber barracks area, is an intact entity whose comparators are the barracks areas in Oulu and Vaasa. The timber barracks area and 11 of its buildings are protected under the decree on state-owned buildings (480/85). Outside the protected area are, among others, two two-storey red-brick barracks buildings erected in 1920, which were joined in 1987 by a likewise red-brick section. The buildings used by the post and telegraph authority form part of the second phase of construction on the area.
