About this site

The oldest buildings at Joensuu station are among the few buildings of the Karelian railway remaining on the Finnish side. Among the most distinguished buildings on the large station yard are, in addition to the station building, the station master's residential house and the old locomotive shed. Of the long row of goods warehouses, only a brick gable end remains. At the southern edge of the area, right at the edge of the railway tracks, there is a railway workers' residential area. The station area is situated near the city centre east of Pielisjoki, where industrial areas have also formed. Joensuu railway station and its surroundings are a nationally significant built cultural environment.
