Turenki railway station

Janakkala

About this site

Turenki has — together with Tikkurila — best preserved its original appearance among the station buildings on the Helsinki-Hämeenlinna railway, even though it has already lost many details. The station building was designed by architect C.A. Edelfelt and represents the earliest station architecture in the country. The tower and porch on the yard side have been demolished from the station building, but it retains a rare preserved wooden platform canopy. The station area also includes a residential building from the 1920s, a cellar and an outbuilding. The station park has been divided into several sections due to road realignment and parking. In the section remaining next to the road bridge there is a memorial for the train collision that occurred in March 1940, when two trains crashed. A goods train collided with a troop transport train carrying soldiers heading to the front: 39 died and 69 were injured.
